Just Add Articulation: Design Research without Scientism
Thinking about practice as research can make designers nervous — surely you need methodical discipline to turn creative practice into respectable knowledge? For the last twenty years, I have argued not. Instead, designers’ practices themselves, and their facility with highly provisional forms of knowing, provide the foundation for a style of research that is all our own — all we need to add is care in describing what we have done. In this talk, I illustrate how this might work, showing projects, methods and designs from the Interaction Research Studio’s portfolio.
